Taking care of your

Sunny & hot gardens

A hot and sunny location will mean that the area receives approximately 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day and will not be impacted by shade. With the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, gardens that fall in these hot and sunny locations will often be faced with dry soil, so it’s important to choose plants that can cope with these circumstances.

Here some general instructions on taking care of your Sunny & hot gardens:

  • Watering:

Plants in sunny and hot gardens will require regular watering, especially during dry spells. Water them deeply once or twice a week, rather than light watering every day. This will encourage deep root growth and help the plants to better withstand periods of drought.

  • Soil:

The soil in hot and sunny gardens should be well-draining, as too much water can lead to root rot. Adding compost or organic matter to the soil can help to improve its water-holding capacity and nutrient content.

  • Mulching:

Mulching can help to retain moisture in the soil and keep the roots cool. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants, being careful not to cover the stems or leaves.

  • Fertilising:

Hot and sunny gardens will require regular fertilising, as the high temperatures can deplete the soil's nutrients. Use a balanced fertiliser or a fertiliser specifically formulated for the types of plants you are growing.

  • Pruning:

Regular pruning can help to promote bushier growth and prevent legginess. Prune back any dead or damaged growth, and cut back overgrown branches to encourage new growth

  • Sun exposure:

Choose plant species that can tolerate full sun and hot temperatures. Some good options include succulents, cacti, agave, lavender, and rosemary. Be sure to give these plants plenty of space to grow, as they can quickly spread out in full sun.

  • Pest control:

Hot and sunny gardens can attract a variety of pests, such as spider mites and aphids. Regularly inspect your plants for signs of pests or disease, and treat them promptly with an appropriate insecticide or fungicide if necessary.
