Acer Palmatum or otherwise known as a Japanese Maple is a decidous, exotic tree grown for it's beautiful shape and leaf variations which change colours with the seasons. They make excellent pot plants, focal plants. Plant them in semi-shade, protected from strong winds and keep well watered during the summer months. Pruning should only be done if necessary and only during winter when the plant is dormant.

Planting instructions for:

Acer palmatum (green)

To plant Acer palmatum (green), select a location with partial shade to filtered sunlight and well-draining soil. Dig a hole that is slightly wider and as deep as the root ball. Place the tree in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the soil surface. Backfill the hole with a mixture of peat moss, compost, and well-rotted manure or leaf mould, gently firming the soil around the roots.

Care instructions

Watering

Adjust the frequency of watering based on the weather conditions, season, and moisture retention of the soil. Regularly check the moisture level by sticking your finger about an inch into the soil.

Soil

Plant Acer palmatum in a well-draining soil mixture rich in organic matter. A mix of peat moss, compost, and well-rotted manure or leaf mold works well. The ideal soil pH for Japanese maples is slightly acidic, ranging from 5.5 to 6.5. If necessary, you can amend the soil with sulfur to lower the pH.

Sunlight

Acer palmatum prefers partial shade to filtered sunlight. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or evening, prolonged exposure to intense sunlight can scorch the leaves. Ideally, place the tree in a location that receives dappled sunlight or morning sun with afternoon shade. This helps protect the delicate foliage from excessive heat and sunburn.

Prunning

Pruning Acer palmatum is primarily done for aesthetic purposes or to remove damaged, diseased, or crossing branches. Remove any dead, broken, or diseased branches first. Then, selectively prune to shape the tree, ensuring an open and well-balanced structure. Avoid heavy pruning, as Japanese maples have a graceful, delicate structure that should be maintained.

Fertilser

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates or use a granular fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of around 10-10-10.
Avoid excessive fertilization, as it can cause the leaves to burn or the tree to produce weak, leggy growth.

Pests & Disease

Japanese maples are generally relatively resistant to pests and diseases but may occasionally face some issues.
Common pests include aphids, scale insects, and caterpillars. Regularly inspect the foliage for any signs of infestation, and if necessary, use insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils to control the pests.
