Aeoniums are a group of succulent shrubs that grow to approximately 1.5m tall and almost as wide. They come in a variety of different leaf forms and colours, prefer full sun and are drought tolerant.

Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum - 23cm

Both containers and the ground can be used to grow Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum'. If growing in a container, use one with drainage holes that is at least 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter. The Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum' prefers organically dense, well-draining soil. Alternatively, you can produce your own cactus or succulent soil by combining equal parts sand, perlite, and peat moss. Make a small hole in the center of the prepared soil before adding it to the container. Put the plant in the hole and add soil to the roots. Firm up the soil surrounding the plant by lightly pressing down on it.

Watering

Is a drought-tolerant plant and should be watered sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between watering, and be careful not to water the leaves or stem directly, as this can lead to rot.

A well-draining soil mix is essential. Use a cactus or succulent soil mix, or amend regular potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage.

Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can scorch the leaves. In areas with intense sunlight, it may benefit from some shade during the hottest parts of the day.

Can be pruned to encourage bushier growth or to remove dead or damaged leaves. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to make cuts just above a leaf node.

Does not require frequent fertilization, but you can feed it once a month during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Common pests that can affect this plant include mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects, which can be treated with insecticidal soap or neem oil. To prevent fungal infections, avoid over watering and ensure good air circulation.
