Almonds have become increasingly popular in recent years due to consumers being more health conscious. They're also suited for growing in the Western Cape due to its mediterranean climate. The trees besides being great producers, are highly ornamental, displaying pinkish-white scented blossoms in spring. Peerless produces a harrd shell but with a rich flavour as will most almonds, two trees are required for cross pollinating

Planting instructions for:

Almond - Peerless tree

Peerless tree, choose a location with full sun exposure and well-draining soil. Before planting, prepare the soil by incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to enhance fertility and drainage. Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough to accommodate the root system without crowding. Place the tree in the hole, making sure the bud union (swollen area where the tree was grafted onto the rootstock) is slightly above the soil surface. Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots. Water the tree thoroughly after planting and continue to water regularly, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring before new growth appears. Prune during the dormant season, removing any dead, damaged, or diseased branches and shaping the tree as desired. Monitor for pests and diseases, taking appropriate action using insecticides or fungicides if necessary.

Care instructions

Watering

Almond trees, including the Peerless variety, require regular watering, especially during the growing season.
Water deeply, allowing the water to penetrate the root zone. Aim for a consistent level of soil moisture without overwatering, as waterlogged soil can lead to root rot.
Monitor the soil moisture regularly and adjust watering frequency based on weather conditions and soil moisture levels.

Soil

Almond trees prefer well-draining soil. A loamy soil with good drainage is ideal for their growth.
Prior to planting, amend the soil with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility and drainage. The soil pH for almonds should be slightly acidic to neutral, ranging from 6.0 to 7.5.

Sunlight

Almond trees, including the Peerless variety, require full sun exposure to thrive and produce abundant fruit.

Plant them in a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Avoid planting in shaded areas or near structures that may cast shadows on the tree

Prunning

Pruning almond trees, including the Peerless variety, is essential for maintaining their health, shape, and productivity. Prune during the dormant season, typically in late winter or early spring before bud break.

Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches, as well as suckers or watersprouts. Thin out crowded branches to improve air circulation and light penetration, which reduces the risk of diseases and enhances fruit production.

Maintain an open center or modified central leader shape for optimal sunlight exposure and airflow.

Fertilser

Almond trees benefit from regular fertilization to support healthy growth and fruit production.
Apply a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 or 14-14-14 formula, in early spring before new growth begins.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the application rate, or consult a local horticulturist for specific recommendations based on soil conditions and nutrient deficiencies. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, as it can promote excessive vegetative growth at the expense of fruit production.

Pests & Disease

Almond trees can be susceptible to various pests and diseases, so monitoring and prevention are important.
Common pests include aphids, mites, scale insects, and caterpillars. Use insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils, or insecticides labelled for almonds when necessary.

Diseases such as fungal infections (e.g., powdery mildew, brown rot) and bacterial canker can occur. Apply appropriate fungicides or bactericides following label instructions and ensure good air circulation and proper sanitation practices.

Regularly remove fallen leaves and debris around the tree to minimize the risk of diseases.
Consult with a local agricultural extension service or horticulturist for specific pest and disease management recommendations in your area.
