Bougainvillea are a group of climbing plants and also a few pot varieties. They're extremely hardy, will tolerate drought, full sun and still provide an explosion of summer colour. In addition their spiny thorns make an excellent security barrier. When planting use generous amounts of compost and fertilise at least once during the flowering season with a high pottasium fertilizer such as 3:1:5 to encourage and enhance flowering.

Planting instructions for:

Bougainvillea 'Donyo' (single bright pink) - 70 litre

To plant Bougainvillea successfully, follow these planting instructions. Choose a location that receives full sun, as Bougainvillea thrives in bright sunlight. The soil should be well-drained and fertile, with a pH level between 5.5 and 6.0. Before planting, prepare the soil by loosening it and adding organic matter like compost to improve its nutrient content and drainage. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball of the Bougainvillea plant. Place the plant in the hole, making sure that the soil level of the plant matches the ground level. Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots. Water the plant thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Provide regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Bougainvillea is generally a low-maintenance plant, but regular pruning is beneficial to promote bushier growth and control its size. Monitor the plant for any signs of pests, such as aphids or caterpillars, and use appropriate measures to control them if necessary. With proper care and maintenance, your Bougainvillea will reward you with vibrant and colourful blooms.

Care instructions

Watering

Bougainvillea prefers well-drained soil, so water it deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, but avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. During hot and dry periods, you may need to water more frequently. Reduce watering during winter when the plant is dormant.

Soil

Plant Bougainvillea in well-draining soil that is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0 to 7.0). Sandy loam or loamy soil is ideal for good drainage. If your soil is heavy or clayey, improve drainage by adding organic matter like compost or perlite.

Sunlight

Bougainvillea thrives in full sun and requires at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Plant it in a location that receives ample sunlight throughout the day for optimal growth and flowering.

Prunning

Prune Bougainvillea regularly to promote bushier growth and control its size. Prune lightly after each blooming cycle to shape the plant and remove dead or diseased branches. To encourage more flowers, pinch back the tips of new growth periodically. Wear protective gloves as Bougainvillea has thorny branches.

Fertilser

Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering plants. Apply the fertilizer every two to three months during the growing season (spring to fall). Follow the package instructions for the appropriate application rate. Avoid over-fertilization, as it can lead to excessive vegetative growth and fewer blooms.

Pests & Disease

Bougainvillea is relatively pest-resistant but can occasionally be affected by aphids, mealybugs, or caterpillars. Regularly inspect the plant for any signs of pests and take appropriate measures, such as using insecticidal soap or neem oil. Bougainvillea can be susceptible to fungal diseases like powdery mildew or leaf spot, especially in humid conditions. Avoid overhead watering, provide good air circulation, and apply fungicides when necessary to manage fungal diseases.
