The indigenous coastal silver oak is a vigorous multi-stemmed tree or large shrub that’s ideal for use as a wind break, screen or hedge. It does exceptionally well along the coast and is drought tolerant. Plant in full sun with compost to give plants a good start and water moderately during the first year, after which the plants should be established enough to find their own underground water source.

Planting instructions for:

Brachylaena discolor - 70 litre

To successfully plant Brachylaena discolor, also known as the Silver Oak, follow these planting instructions. Choose a location that receives full sun to partial shade, as Brachylaena discolor can tolerate a range of light conditions. The soil should be well-drained, fertile, and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0 to 7.0). Before planting, prepare the soil by loosening it and removing any weeds or debris. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball of the plant. Place the plant in the hole, making sure that the soil level of the plant matches the ground level. Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots. Water the plant thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Brachylaena discolor is generally a low-maintenance plant, but occasional pruning may be required to remove dead or damaged branches. Monitor the plant for any signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate measures to control them if necessary. With proper care, your Brachylaena discolour will thrive and add beauty to your garden with its distinctive silvery foliage.

Care instructions

Watering

Brachylaena discolor prefers regular watering, especially during dry periods. Water deeply and thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Soil

Plant Brachylaena discolor in well-draining soil that is fertile and loamy. Amend heavy clay or sandy soils by adding organic matter, such as compost, to improve soil structure and drainage.

Sunlight

Brachylaena discolor thrives in full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate a range of light conditions, but it performs best when it receives at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Prunning

Brachylaena discolor generally requires minimal pruning. Prune selectively to maintain its natural shape and remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches. Pruning can be done in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.

Fertilser

Fertilization needs for Brachylaena discolor are typically low. If necessary, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the appropriate application rate.

Pests & Disease

Brachylaena discolor is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, occasional issues may arise, such as aphids, mealybugs, or leaf spot diseases. Monitor the plant regularly for any signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate measures to control them, such as using insecticidal soap or fungicides as necessary.
